Finland’s state-owned gambling operator, Veikkaus, has announced that starting from January 1st, 2024, all scratch card games will require ID verification. This new requirement applies to both in-person and online purchases of scratch cards, as well as to those claiming winnings from scratch card and lottery games.
Veikkaus has been gradually introducing customer verification for all of its games, and since May 2023, identification has been required for all purchases of Lotto and Eurojackpot games. In-person purchases can be made using a physical Veikkaus card, a driving license, personal ID, Kela card, or a virtual card accessed through the Veikkaus mobile app.
According to the company’s statement, identification will not be mandatory for scratch card games until the end of 2023. However, any winnings from cards purchased in 2023 can be claimed without the need for ID verification until the end of 2024.
Ville Venojärvi, director of Veikkaus lottery games, explained that this new requirement aims to limit the negative impacts of problem gambling and prevent minors from accessing gambling products. He emphasized that Veikkaus is one of the first game companies worldwide to implement identification requirements for both digital and physical channels, including scratch cards. The use of identification will help prevent gambling-related harm, ensure age limit compliance, and create a safer gaming environment for all players.
By introducing mandatory ID verification for scratch card games, Veikkaus is taking a proactive approach to promote responsible gambling and protect vulnerable individuals, while also combatting underage gambling. This move aligns with the company’s commitment to fostering a secure and accountable gaming industry.
